ABSTRACT:

This session will feature a panel of three entrepreneurs and leaders who have built successful cleantech companies. These leaders will share their stories, their 'lessons from the edge', and what it takes to build a successful company.

Russel Matichuk is the President of Sumex Capital, which focuses on Corporate Finance Advisory Services, Business Brokering and Commercial Mortgages.  He is currently on the board of 6 other private companies and is the interim CEO for another. Rus is the Chairman of the Alberta Clean Technologies Industry Alliance and has been the Chairman or in senior leadership roles in many different regional and national associations and industry initiatives.  Rus was instrumental in the launch of Deal Generator, VenturePrize, and the Banff Venture Forum and continues to remain active in the investment community.  Earlier in his career, Rus founded a number of technology based companies raising millions and setting up strategic alliances around the globe.

Mr. Banica is the Founder and CEO of Synodon Inc., an advanced remote sensing company. Over the last 15 years, Mr. Banica has been involved with the design of a number of satellite instruments as well as a variety of oil and gas measurement technologies and has built a strong understanding of gas plume dynamics and the various in-situ or remote sensing techniques used to detect, quantify and map emission sources.

Steve Petrone is the Founder and CEO of Quantiam Technologies Inc., an Edmonton-based high technology company developing and commercializing disruptive new products based on Advanced Materials, Coatings, Surfaces and Catalysis. Prior to founding Quantiam in 1998, Dr. Petrone worked at Dofasco, Stelco, and was then recruited by Sherritt in 1991 as part of Westaim.

Dr. Petrone has spent the last 25 years developing new technology businesses in Edmonton. He has over 30 years of corporate and entrepreneurial experience in R&D, Manufacturing, Business Development and Marketing. To-date, he has led over 1,100 person years of research and commercialization efforts having raised over $80M of investments, and commercialized new products with total direct investments of over $180M. Quantiam is now in its 16th year of operation and represents one of Canada’s major efforts in advancing Nanotechnology and Cleantech. In 2011, Quantiam launched a joint venture with BASF of Germany, BASF Qtech Inc., to jointly commercialize a core Cleantech technology.
